Earthquake (Japan)

Probably most of you know by now that Japan just experienced two large earthquakes back to back. The second and largest one measured an 8.9 on the richter scale at it's epicenter and occurred on March 11, 2011, 3PM, about 30 miles off the coast of Sendai - which is about 230 miles north of Tokyo. I live about 300km (or 180 miles) west/south-west of Tokyo. So about 440~450 miles as the crow flied from my house. Here it registered a 4.0.

I can sense alpha waves. I had been sensing them for about the past 4 to 5 days. When they hit me it's a similar feeling to the cheek-clenching disorientation one feels while undergoing vertigo. I guess this is what birds and animals react to as well. Anyway, so I was prepared. I had my little survival pack, my camera, and a heavy jacket (it's about 10C highs here) on a hook near my door. When this last one hit I was out the door and in a large clearing in less than 30 seconds.

It was a very easy quake - very gentle rolling like the sway of a boat on calm seas. It actually reminded me of standing on a surfboard. For some reason the first thing I thought to do while standing there was to whip out my stopwatch and time it. From the time I started the clock to the last detectable wave was 12 minutes 22 seconds. Wow! And then... it continued... and continued some more. It seemed like for the better part of an hour I was still feeling the sways and tilts. And they were all verifiable by watching the wobble of two telephone posts lined up in line of sight. It's actually still going on and the last one was March 12, at about 4AM (2.5 hours prior to writing this, and 37 hours after the big one). It registered a 1.8 here where I live but I had my pack, jacket, and was in the clearing in less than 15 seconds all the same ;)

The large quake of 11/3, 3:00PM didn't do much damage on it's own. Japanese have lived on one of the most active faults for thousands of years and the culture oscillates it's building methods between weather & quake safe and ultra-cheap. Luckily the past 20 years here there has been a huge swing toward the safe side of the pendulum. Given that and the epicenter's location I seriously doubt more than a few hundred people perished as a direct result of the quake and that's probably considering both of the quakes.

The image(s) you see (bottom) and at that link, are an indirect result however. A title wave or "tsunami" in Japanese, measuring between 8 meters and 10 meters in height across the bulk of it slammed into the coastal areas and just like smaller ones do at the beach flowed inland. A title wave like this is actually a wave set just like surf and yes one could indeed surf these massive waves when they are off the coast and not gushing between trees and houses. It's ALSO like a tidal increase and that overall increase is what is being referred to when the news people say "10 meters high".

This tidal wave has done massive damage and the death toll will be very very high - perhaps in the hundreds of thousands but certainly in the tens of thousands. This ocean event has also created several massive whirl-poolsthat have sucked down ships and their crew members. We won't know exactly how many people died for months. And because of the conditions caused by this many more people will die over the next few days. Prayer has been scientifically proven to help so even if you're not usually a praying man I urge you to pray (or meditate) for the safety, well being, and survival of those in trouble!

I'd like to mention that flood water is dirty! Very very dirty! It's much more "septic" than just before you flush your toilet and more like after it's been sitting there for a week but mixed with rotting garbage and in this case industrial chemicals and chemical wastes.

Another impending doom to include in your prayers is an impending meltdown of a near-by nuclear power plant. It's located here:

http://maps.google.co.jp/?ie=UTF8&h...ent=3,0x6020dd57c23bb399:0xfcfbe47a95994d47,1

and the core coolant inlet valves are currently malfunctioning. The jet streams sweep down from China and up from the left side of the pacific basin. They meet just about right over Japan at it's western most tip and flow eastward across Japan and end up on the west coast of the USA and Mexico. If this thing does go off I would avoid any kind of processed fish for at least 4 years, including all salmon that's not from scandinavia, and I would increase the amount of iodine supplements and vitamin C as well.

http://thyroid.about.com/library/weekly/aa100199.htm And lots and lots of kelp will do it too! ;)

Finally, what caused this earthquake? Well it's a perfectly natural occurrence and Japan gets a big one like this about every 100 years. The fact that we were just blasted with a VERY large coronal ejection (solar flare) and that we entered a super-moon event at almost the same time probably had a lot to do with it. You can search "Super Moon 2011" to find out more about that but it started a few days ago and will last for a few weeks more. The extreme of this lunar event will be on March 19th. Either of these two events separately only has minimal affects on planetary conditions but some scientists are suggesting that the two events combine to multiply the overall impact to what may be "noticeable" levels.

I'd like to stress here that those suggesting man-made global warming (AKA: Climate change) is somehow at fault are either mindless sheep or are after 2 things: A socialistic/communistic control grid, and/or YOUR MONEY! :D By now I assume most of us have read of the various and many frauds the various "governmental agencies" have been caught red handed trying to perpetrate on the world. No doubt they will use this event to further their backward-arse goals and already have been doing so - which is why I felt the need to mention it here.

In conclusion, pray for us, be safe, and don't get suckered in by scam artists trying to use human suffering to further their personal gain or promote their political agenda.

Peace out!

Glad you are safe. My thoughts and prayers go out to the hundreds of thousands of people whose lives changed forever in an instant. It is difficult to look at the video of the tsunami and the devastation it has caused.

Thank you for the report. A terrible disaster, but at the same time visually spectacular. Hopefully, there will be at least a hundred years before there's another one of this magnitude.

Now appears the reactor may be in melt down. Which adds a mega clean up operation. So the above advice could well need to be heeded.
Many years ago, when Chernobyl went up, chemists refused to supply me with iodine, saying there was no need. I didn't trust them but it can be what your up against. I ended up getting throat sweets containing iodine for my kids.
Lets hope there are no radioactive leaks.

In the news the power plant has exploded and there is now ZERO containment of core materials. A large amount of the fuel was ejected into the atmosphere as a result of the explosion. Evacuation is under way and the "stated" zones that is being affected is being increased almost hourly. Currently it's at 50km. Here's a older map showing it at 20km.

I'm not the only one who thinks there is a melt-down it seems:

American peoples on the western side of the continent might wish to read this:
http://standeyo.com/News_Files/NBC/KI.html - please read all.

People in Japan can NOT purchase Potassium Iodide (KI) nor Potassium Iodate (KIO3) anywhere! There's the import route but it's slow. There is a substitute however that will deliver the same 100mg of protective iodine to the thyroid! It's 70mg/ml if swallowed and about 7mg/ml if gargled and spat out. The over the counter products costing about ¥800 each look like this. You may need a picture if you can't read Japanese - although the one in the box there has english text for ingredients and etc.

There is a news article online I read about how the smart educated Finland populous have swarmed on drugstores for supplies of KI as a result of Japan's disaster. Although I'm not sure if this disaster will actually affect them or not:

I live in Tokyo. I appreciate the information about the reactor, but it's still being overblown by the media. Although a few people have suffer radiation poisoning it was those very near the reactor and some of the last to be evacuated. There isn't a reason to be spreading so much fear at this point.

The quake is Tokyo felt quite a bit stronger than Tesselator experienced. I was on the 18th floor of my office building at the time. Although you could stay standing it was very unsteady. The buildings around where swaying quite wildly. I'd say the building across from us maybe went up to meter in each direction. I feel for the window washer that was on the building across the intersection.

Overall, there was very little damage in Tokyo. I have no doubt the strict building guidelines played a huge role in keeping people safe here. The devastation to the north has impacted millions and any support you can send would be welcome. Just watch the news with some skepticism. Western channels, in particular the US news networks have been more prone to spreading FUD than any real reporting.

Cj, Overblown? I'm trying VERY hard to underplay it here!

"(Reuters) - Nuclear fuel rods at a quake-stricken Japanese nuclear reactor are now fully exposed, Jiji news agency said, quoting the plant's operator, Tokyo Eletcric Power Co ."

Don't you guys ever use google? Or do you just refuse to believe anything that you read?

Anyway, the Japanese government is now fully admitting that Reactor #1 went full melt-down but say that containment is still good enough that there's no need for panic. Credentialed experts on the light-water reactor design used in all 6 of the Fukushima plants say that such a thing is impossible. Reactor #3 has now also exploded and the resulting shock-wave was measured at 11 times the force as the explosion from #1.

No matter weather you choose to believe the calming reassurances of the gov. officials or your eyes and a bit of common sense it's a very good idea to prepare for the worst while hoping for the best!

There are five (5) reactor plants at Fukushima that are currently in big big trouble. There are a total or 12 reactors in Japan that are in critical condition as a result of the quake. The quake itself BTW, has recently been upgraded to a seismological rating of 9.1 instead of the earlier 8.9 and the initial 8.7 it was rated at. I don't know enough about that science to know why or even how these upgradings happen. But officials are now saying it was a 9.1 quake. As the scale plots non-linearly that 0.2 difference is rather massive tho!

I realize the intensity and depth of this event, T. However, some of us don't necessarily believe everything written on the internet is gospel truth. ]'-)

Relax. You're under a lot of stress and your recent posts are going a little off the deep end.

The enormity of this event and the impact on Japan, on the world, is nothing to sneeze at. The human suffering is vast; the loss of talented, hard-working, bright people and their life's ideas impossible to put a value on. But in the end, we will all of us who remain standing pick up the pieces and go on, endure what is to be endured, and find our way into the future. Because that is what Life is all about.

"Celebrate the victories because they are few.
Mourn the losses because they are many."

How is it going off the deep end to suggest that it's wise to prepare? Heck KI is actually good for you if nothing else.

To belittle an event that 1) Moved an entire country as much as 8 feet, 2) shifted the world's rotational axis 10 centimeters, 3) ripped a brand new hole in the ocean floor 250 miles (400 kilometers) long by 100 miles (160 kilometers) wide, and 4) sent a tidal-wave inland as far as 10 miles is, I'm afraid, shockingly ignorant.

There is nothing "off the deep end" about disseminating information as it unfolds so that those in harm's way may prepare. Also, IMHO, your message seems a little cold if not disrespectful when you say "we will all of us who remain standing pick up the pieces and go on..."

Forget it, T. I won't honor that with further response. No one "belittled an event that ... " etc. You're raving.

I'll unsubscribe from this thread and ignore you in the future. I'll get my first hand information from my other friends who are there, and their families.

I wish you well.
