Rapidly becoming a thing of the past (sort of like phone booths)... contact sheets have long been the staple for photo editing. Anyone doing their own process has doubtlessly created hundreds of these.
If there's a single organization that can summarize most of photographic history... its Magnum. They've produced a book.. a *huge* book, with incredible reproduction quality. They've included the iconic image, the contact sheet from which it came, and a narrative by the photographer about what went on during the creation of the image.
It should be on every photographer's bookshelf.. and may in itself motivate the re-use of film
