    the late Baroness Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher who died earlier today and was probably the United Kingdom's greatest peacetime Prime Minister. R.I.P. Margaret.

One of the best, if not THE best, leader of the United Kingdom since Winston Churchill.

Few politicians have left such an impression. A truly great primes minister, regardless of the fact that I don't agree with all of her political views and actions.

I can't agree. Blatant electioneering tax cuts depriving the Exchequer of revenue for public services... and disgraceful privatisations by selling off publicly-owned assets to private interests. Just two features, in a track record of which to be ashamed.

I accept that I'll probably get 'flamed' for these opinions, but they are my opinions, and no amount of contradiction will change them.

Everyone will have their own opinion of Lady T.

I once had the privilege of speaking with El Commandante of Cuba during the height of MT's period in office and his views were identical to yours tbhv55.

After listening to a torrade from him he asked me a simple question, "Why is MT selling all of your country's wealth?" My reply was equally simple, "she is selling it back to the British people".

It was a concept that he just couldn't accept and our short conversation was quickly over!

She sold it back to some of the people i.e. those who could afford it.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree...

    Controversial even in death.

MT made her mark in one indelible way by what she wasn't ... she wasn't a waffling, vague and gelatinous politician. Like it or not, you knew where she stood.

Any debate on M.T is like Canon vs Nikon or Apple vs Windows, she was an extremely divisive politician, one side's dream and the other side's nightmare.

Best we can hope for is that people agree to disagree.

Either way she has passed away and may she rest in peace.

Re: the late Baroness Margaret Thatcher

She certainly was one heck of a guy!

    but

I'm with The Guardian (and Tim tbhv55) on this:

"Her legacy is of public division,

    private selfishness,

    and a cult of greed,

which together shackle far more of the public spirit

    than they ever set free".

    Cheers,

    Gandolfi.

Yes, it always puzzled me how she could sell things that already belonged to the British people back to the British people. Did she sell used cars before entering politics by any chance?

I hadn't seen the Guardian on this, but I'd say that's a pretty good summary.

I agree. One of the rare breed of politicians with a backbone who, like it or not, actually got things done. I think that like Reagan, history will be kinder to her legacy than the divisive feelings of the time. She will always be the socialist hate poster child but the tough medicine of her terms in office prevented the UK from becoming another bankrupt Greece or Portugal. (You could argue that the current and previous governing spineless wonders are doing their best to achieve it anyway)

Re: the late Baroness Margaret Thatcher

One of the beauties of the free open society that she championed is that we're all free to agree or disagree and I'm certainly grateful for that.

I do understand the negativity towards her from certain parts of society. Yet for many others she's nothing less than a national hero who despised the concept of kicking the can down the road (the current 'solution' to political problems it seems).

Anyway, regardless of political persuasion, RIP Margaret.

Magret Thatcher threw people out of legal squats the second she got in power. She made people living on the margins of life homeless.
