Poll: ONE thing that would make your pictures better

The National Foundation for the Suppression of Crappy Photography, a wholly fictitious agency of the U.S. Department of Fantasy, has announced a grant program open to amateur and professional photographers living both in the US and elsewhere.

The program will provide you with the funds to purchase exactly ONE thing that that you guarantee will make your photographs better.

Important: Not "bigger", "sharper", "more colorful", "more salable," etc... Better.

For economic planning purposes, please respond to the poll by indicating what category of thing you will purchase with your grant. Supplementary essay responses are encouraged but not required.

    Thank you for your participation.

NOTE: Programs of the USDOF are offered without discrimination on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, geographic or planetary origin, socioeconomic background, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus or species.

Re: Poll: ONE thing that would make your pictures better

You forgot the most important (to me): TIME to shoot.

I clearly do my best work (and would continue to improve, I believe) when I have dedicated time to shoot without distraction, mental anguish, guilt for going on photography dedicated trips where I can get into my "groove". (And by that way, that's not spousal guilt, quite the opposite, I'm a workaholic.)

Education (or Training if you will) of any sort is almost never a bad idea to get people pointed in the right direction. I'm a firm believer in that buying the best equipment you can afford for the particular job at hand is never a bad idea either. I would also suggest imagination and inspiration over duplication. Never be afraid to try something different and new to you. Some of my favorite shots came from me trying "abnormal stuff" for me.

    I object,
I think that the government is over-reaching, just as they in the Banking and Auto Industries.
If I want to take crappy photos, it is my right!
It sounds like it is time for a tea party!
The one thing that would improve my opportunity to take good pictures would be a smaller government and lower taxes which would equate to more time to take pictures and more money to buy gear, pay models, or travel to venues.
You can take your freaking fictitious government agency to the next election but don't get comfortable!
Now get out of my life!

    couldn't resist quoting the OP:

"...keep shooting with whatever's comfortable, and simply spend the extra cash hiring lackeys and syncophants to tell you how fabulous your pictures are..."

speaking tongue out of cheek, actually feedback is quite useful, sometimes even on this forum

Great idea Terry. Come to Phoenix and we will drive up to the Canyon to start. At least I can do after making you spend money. The Canyon is a great place for the long glass as well

Clarification: Let's assume that time, imagination, experience etc. are all NOT "things" that can be acquired, at least not in one lump. It goes without saying that we all would like more of those.

And I've got a question for those who responded that their work would be improved by opportunity (publication, exhibition, etc.): If your work is lousy, how will the opportunity to inflict it on other people make it better?

(This is not a snarky question; I've actually got my own answer to it, I just want to see if the other people's answer is the same as mine would be.)

    WORK!

That would be my number one choice. How will that make me better than I am now? Every new challenge helps make me better ... no two jobs are identical and each one teaches you something new while forcing new creative ideas to solve problems.

Work pays for the new and better whatever ... and pays to go somewhere else new to make photographs just for me.

Ahhh the Simpson Desert... I happened to cross when there was a full bloom, just billions of yellow and white flowers covering the landscape. Surreal. And would never have happended if I didn't give myself TIME to spend a year in Australia.

There are lots more quotations about this sort of thing -- your first 10k pix are the worst -- I've not failed, found 10k ways that don't work -- and so on.

I think that we have the same -- or a very similar -- problem; but I also think tthat 'natural genius' is a very overdone concept. All the evidence suggests that while there are people with inherent talent at doing things, still they achive greatness through hard work and practice. And those of us who don't have this 'natural' talent can achive through work -- and anyway, what is so 'natural' about photography? -- music I could understand, but not turning a 3D world into, say, a 2D black and white one.

I think I already said about hard work and recognition . . call it greatness if you like.

I do agree that genius on it's own isn't enough, and I also agree that hard work will get you a long way without genius. I also know that these things are largely a continuum, so it isn't quite something you have, or haven't got. But I still think that it is a reality.

I don't agree with you about the distinction between music and photography - isn't it just music for the eyes rather than the ears?

Re: Poll: ONE thing that would make your pictures better

Personally? The biggest difference to my photography would be gained by an upgrade to my medical position. I have serious problems with my ankles/feet which make all walking and standing painful. I'm also pretty much useless on non even ground. The difference not having to overcome this would be huge to be able to actualise my photographic visions, both with my wedding photography and my other work.

Of course losing 70 pounds of extra weight which I'm lugging about on top of those dud ankles/feet would bring me back to close to where I was in my younger days in an anti-terrorist unit in the police on secondment from the army.

If you had to ask me for one more thing that would make a huge difference? If I could get out of bed in the morning for that incredible clean and clear dawn light.

I do wonder though whether my work achieved despite my problems will always be more powerful due to the need to have to circumvent said problems....
I am not a painter, nor an artist. Therefore I can see straight, and that may be my undoing. - Alfred Stieglitz

Didn't express myself well enough; I meant that some people seem to be born with perfect pitch, and others like me are tone deaf; there doesn't seem to be much I can do about it -- so, for some people, musical composition and appreciation is much easier -- easier to become a genius.

    Hmm
you've heard of 'cloth ears' . . . well, I've long believed in the concept of 'cloth eyes'. Lots of people are colour blind, which might be construed as the same thing?

Re: Poll: ONE thing that would make your pictures better

I've just looked at the results.

(I didn't vote myself, because, as stated I don't think any of those things are guaranteed to improve my photography - we need a 'none of these' button)

Still, not a single person has voted for better camera equipment, which is fascinating considering the terrible outbursts of GAS around here.

Should one construe that although we all like to buy new kit, none of us really believes that it will improve our photography?

    boys toys indeed!

I don't think any real photographer believes that the equipment will make their vision better. What most do believe is that it will make their achieving that vision easier.

It's like the old crack that amatuers discuss cameras and lenses while pro's talk about bags and tripods. Most all purchases by serious photographers are simply to make their life easier...

Ah, but the proposition was that it would improve their 'photography' not their 'vision'. I don't think of it as the same thing.

I hadn't heard that one before . . . I have a nice new bag coming from FOGG, I've just been tracking it, unfortunately the french post office seem to like it as well (it's currently in mid-pyrenees).

Ben - I'm sorry to hear about your legs -

Re: Poll: ONE thing that would make your pictures better

How do you seperate photography and vision Jono? Is the definition of the former just the technical aspects? If so then why would books and workshops be relevant? I'd understood it that the umbrella of photography traditionally covered both the vision and the methods used to actualise that vision.

To be honest, I always see the phrase 'photography' to belittle what is great about the vision of great art achieved with a camera. Kinda like calling an artist 'painter'. Gives the impression that the greatness achieved is only due to their prowess at the technical aspects of the making of the piece.

    Hi Ben
yep - I think that's how I separated it, at least, 'photography' would include technical aspects which 'vision' would not. as might books or workshops
