    What's your "home" page?

This has little to do with photography, but I'd be interested to know what people are using for the startup or "home" page of their internet browser. I've been using MSN for a long time since it is fairly easy to structure the page with blocks of info I like to have handy. But lately, I am getting increasingly depressed with sensational headlines/links to articles that are often shallow and misleading. I guess it's time for a change.

So when you start up your browser, what's the first page that comes up?

    Thanks!
    Tim

I'm on the new Safari and have it setup with their new grid display of 12 different pages for one click access. Getdpi is one of my 12.

Home page in Safari on all of my Macs is news.google.com. I've customized it to aggregate news in regions that I follow closest. Other browsers that I use for various projects typically have no home page assigned.

For RSS I use NetNewsWire which is an excellent Mac RRS reader.

Same, except I also use FlashBlock and NoScript, too, in addition to AdBlock.

Don't do it -- the admins are a pain the ***.

I'm kind of starting to brewing the mindset that getting totally away from Google may not be such a bad thing.

    Nowadays, blank!

After using several different and getting them customized just the way I want, they would change stuff and leave me unhappy. So, I merely go to the various areas in which I'm interested and accept that it's a few extra keystrokes and minutes. The beauty of being retar...er retired is that I have more time.

I think I'd have to work up to that but understand the appeal. I've picked up some habits (both good and bad) after years of use. Like being able to scan the DOW, the weather, and a few other bits with one page. But the price to pay for that convenience, whether it's google or MSN is starting to bug me. Wish I could make my very own home page that avoids the pitfalls of a "sponsored" page.

Blank page -- when I launch my browser I usually want to go to a specific URL.

To keep track of forums, blogs, and news I use a separate RSS reader application.

    Re: What's your "home" page?

I'm finding twitter awesome. It's like having hundreds of people browsing the web for you. I don't think I could ever go back to the old "check your 5 favorite sites over and over" mode.

With twitter accessed via an external app, I'm only using the browser for the google reader + facebook. Still trying to figure out how to be more efficient with forums (fori? ). Otherwise the browser has become a secondary tool in some sense

    Re: What's your "home" page?

Thanks to everyone who shared their home page preference. After a short trial with several of the ideas, I've decided on using The New York Times as my home or startup page. That might change, but for now it provides a lot of possible avenues to explore.

    Best,

    Re: What's your "home" page?

i go for a blank page... if i want to go to a page i use often its either in my bookmarks or a couple of keystrokes and I am there.. for the rest.. well just ask google.

customized pages or even tabs are not for me... I remember when the entire internet was about 6 pages :-)

    cheers

    Re: What's your "home" page?

I don't mean to belabor this, but I felt like I wanted to make note of something I've discovered after switching my home page to the NYT. Specifically, that there are a lot of terrific photographers out there!

I know that sounds pretty obvious, but I'd been using MSN as my home page for years. It wasn't uncommon to be faced with a page containing lots of "stock" photography. Which is fine as far as it goes. But every day and several times during the day, the NYT page delivers some truly wonderful photo journalism. Those guys are good.

So purely by chance I've discovered another place to view excellent photos. And I encourage you to look for a publication or blog, or whatever, that might serve as a jumping off point for you when you open your browser. Maybe the NYT isn't your cup of tea, but there's probably a newspaper or publication somewhere that will fit your bill.

If the newspapers are scrambling to stay alive, I feel like the least I can do is show up on their page and maybe count as a click-through. In some roundabout way it might even help photojournalism. Just a thought.

    lxquick is interesting alternative.

    Re: What's your "home" page?

The last zillion years, it has been blank, since I often start the day browsing through a number of pages anyway. I consider changing to Facebook though. I find that a surprisingly inspiring network, and it keeps me in contact with my family as well as old and new friends, most of them living thousands of kilometers away.

Not if you are looking for accuracy in reporting -- the NYT is at the bottom of that toilet. Maybe it is good for original photos, as TRSmith mentions above???

I have used ixquick off and on for several months, or so. It's on my browser tool bar. The problem is that I am Google-ized -- trained to rapidly segregate the search returns from a Google search. ixquick's font and layout is more difficult to read and they embed paid search returns in with the regular returns.

Fwiw, Catherine Austin Fitts is associated with ixquick -- on the board of directors or something like that.

    Re: What's your "home" page?

I use FireFox and have it set to start with a series of tabs, mostly forums for my various hobbies & interests.

I don't do "Portal" pages. Too much clutter, too much of which is noise. News sites -- nah. Nt the first thing I want to see.

I set the home page to one of my own websites.
Loads fast, I don't think about it. Most other things are just a click away.
