Quarantine Pictures * Any Format *

Since most of us are in some type of quarantine at the moment, why not share photos we can make right now. Stuff around the house, the yard, the tea kettle, etc. Oh yeah and the cat!! I'll start and hope you all join in.

My home property is full of trees; some palm, some oak and pine, and some tungoil. Tungoil (aka Kalo Nut trees) can be poisonous if you eat the seeds inside the nuts, but their flowers are pretty to look at this time of year. They drop off in a few days so I try to catch a shot when their here.

Great idea Darlene, making new pictures around the house, dusting off hard drives and scanning more old slides is most of what I can do photographically these days.

Here's a few from my bear hunt in the neighbourhood where I live

    Hi there

Look at this nice ball I've got

    Hanging in there

    I'm in quarantine

    All Sony A7ii + OM Zuiko 85/2

People are putting these bears and other stuffed animals out so partents who are "airing" small children have something of a scavenger hunt. They take pictures of them with their phone and share them on social media, so why not here

In Belgium we're still allowed to go out on bicycle or foot as long as we keep our distance. Cars can only be used to go to work and/or shopping but other "non essential" trips are prohibited (and heavily fined if you get caught)

I can still take walks for exercise purposes - so I take a camera with me of course.

    Beautiful performance!

I always get works to 90%, and then get bored (or scared) and move on. Terrible habit! Here’s a first attempt at tempo of the easiest quarter of a Bach/Busoni Chorale Prelude.

My use of "always" was overly optimistic; "on rare occasions" works better. It also depends on the listener. I have a sister-in-law who is a professional pianist. Judging by her reactions, I think the needle barely budges off of zero.

Maybe your are just choosing the wrong pieces? I find works by John Cage or Throbbing Gristle easy to master...although may not lead to different reactions. (But we artestes are never understood in our times)

Steamboat Landing at the waterfront farmers market is usually jammed with people, even on non market days they come to have lunch, get some fresh air, and of course to socialize. This image taken 3 days ago illustrates the extreme changes in social behavior brought on by CV19. There is a picnic bench at the end of the dock that is usually positioned beneath the pergola, but today a woman came to browse on her laptop and she dragged the table over to the far right end of the dock. Another woman came to read and she positioned herself at the far end of another branch of the dock behind the lady in magenta. Social distancing.

Two reasons to stay inside then.

Hope you came through the storms allright, having your roof torn off these days would be a disaster.

    Absolutely!

Had a tree crash through the roof when Hurricane Hermine came through Tallahassee in 2016.
Spent over a year cleaning up and rebuilding our home in Redland, FL after Hurricane Katrina (8/2005) and then Hurricane Wilma (10/2005) hit.
We headed to north Florida after that, but hurricanes can happen anywhere in Florida, just not so much in the northern part.

The government is doing a large poster campaign, even at the bus stops.

I like their attitude of "positive" messages they try to spread. Most are instructions what to do and not so much what is forbidden

The virus can only get to you via surface contact transferred through 1. mucus membrane in mouth/eyes/nose or 2. aerosol in confined places - so stay inside, 3. avoid contact with surfaces outside of your home, use social distancing and wash hands properly with soap often. We are all in this together.

Here in NYC, we are told that anyone with symptoms is positive. My wife and I have had (thankfully) mild cases for the past week. Things can always turn bad, but the vast majority of cases are no worse than "feel like crap for a week". Well, we certainly qualify.

So, instead of empty playgrounds and public transportation, I give you a look at your typical COVID-19 case - me.

Food and liquor stores are still open here in Belgium (selling essentials). Saw this sign at the liquor store today:

A couple of weeks ago when all this was kicking off I read somewhere on the internet that the first thing to disappear from supermarket shelves in Belgium was Corona beer.

Then someone commented "Who says the Belgians don't have a sense of humour?"

When I went to the supermarket when this all started I saw plenty of Corona and other (better) Belgian beers on the shelves. Like in many other countries the empty shelves were toilet paper, dry pasta and flower.

Apparently people were not realising yet that they would be close to locked up in the house with their kids and spouse for an extended period, so large amounts of beer and liquor would probably be needed as well to survive

Our local supermarket is completely out of ice cream (but not frozen pizza) That could explain why it is out of toilet paper, too.

Glad you are well. The problem is that it might have been COVID-19 or some other type of infection--can't tell unless you are tested. Given that the NYC/NJ area account for half of the known cases in the US, I would still be careful. Right now it is pollen season in KC and I can't distinguish between hay fever and on-coming flu symptoms (no temperature yet).

But I am sure you will be fine in NYC, because if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere! (Well, perhaps not Italy that has the the highest death toll of any country.)

Sorry for the dark humor--I have to find something else to do than read the news...

Judging by the 'chops' you evidenced in the piano link above - I'd say that your mental faculties are just fine - and of coursea little reward to yourself after the Covid episode is a necessary part of ful recovery regime.

Normally every sunny weekend the smaller roads and dikes in Belgium are packed with large groups of cycle tourists (or cycle terrorists as they're sometimes called). Today they were few and far between, and keeping their obligatory social distance

This is proper social distancing, and in this case the droplets from the spray are healthy!

Our local Children's Garden was closed today with a sign at the entrance describing curve flattening and why it is important.

Family update: My wife and I and our younger daughter are all working our way through the infection. My daughter and I lost our sense of smell, which is a better positive virus test than almost anything else. If you've never had anosmia, it's impossible to describe. Gorgonzola tastes like American cheese. Coffee smells and tastes "warm".

The good news is that (so far) we all have had mild cases. Nothing is certain, but we no longer have fevers, and the coughing is getting less frequent. Our elder daughter is so far unaffected. We're hoping she has an asymptomatic case so that she gains some immunity.

Ok, a video of the "iPhone placed at the end of the keyboard" variety: here is the entire Bach/Busoni played a bit slower, but with not too many hiccups.

If you want to hear how it SHOULD be done, look up Horowitz's recording from 1934. The title starts "Nun freut euch..." It's on youtube...

    Awesome! Simply awesome, Matt.

I am so impressed! It would take my breath away if I was not already having trouble breathing, from stress, not the virus.

Great playing Matt, and that while you're recovering from Corona Awesome!
I should get my trumpet from the attick and see if I can still produce some reasonable sound, another great idea to get through this quiet time we now have, so thanks for that as well . But I promise not to record myself and post it here, I don't want to scare any cats

Hope you get well soon, and the same for your wife and daughter.

Very good to hear you and your family are coming through it, Matt!
And that's quite the piano piece! You're way outta my league!

Stay well, stay optimistic, keep on going!

Thank you all for your good wishes!

And you're MUCH more supportive of my piano playing than my own family. My older brother, a musicologist married to a concert pianist, sent me a list of easier Bach transcriptions I might consider learning instead. Family!

    Warmest regards,

    Matt
