I still have vivid memories of my first work experience picking shade grown tobacco in the Connecticut river valley. I was 14 years old and wanted a summer job, but could not yet work legally so we were paid cash at the end of each day of hard labor picking tobacco leaves in the boiling hot fields underneath the cloth tents covering the plants. It was a very unhealthy experience to say the least.

One of the fields near Windsor CT that I worked in as a child.

Wow, Carl, that is a fantastic story! It's incredible to hear about your first work experience picking shade-grown tobacco in the Connecticut River Valley. Working under those hot cloth tents at the age of 14 must have been quite an adventure, albeit a challenging one. Your determination and resilience to tackle such hard labor at a young age is truly remarkable. I can only imagine the unique memories and lessons you must have gathered from that experience. Thank you for sharing this glimpse into your past with us.

The barn, pictured near Cairo, Georgia, belongs to a friend's family. It is now only used for storage and taking pictures.

Best wishes!
