    Fun with Leica X (all models)

    Try as I might, I could not find a "Fun with" picture thread for the Leica X1, X2, X Vario cameras. And since there're a couple of new X models, I thought it would be nice to start one for all of them...

    I'll add a couple of photos in a second post. Add some of your own!

    Re: Fun with Leica X (all models)

    I was thinking about all the Photokina discussion and new Leica stuff, particularly the new D-Lux and X offerings. I realized that I hadn't taken my X2 out for a walk in some time, so I decided to take it on my Saturday morning walk yesterday. Here are two from a set of nine photos made yesterday.

    Leica X2 - ISO 400 @ f/8 @ 1/125

    Leica X2 - ISO 400 @ f/8 @ 1/160

    Click this link to see the whole set of nine: Tree - 2014

    I don't think I need another camera in this class at the moment. The X2 will do.

    Thanks for looking! Comments always appreciated.

    With company like you two, I gotta have a flick at this.
    Never thought I'd bond with this simple "Digital Barnack", but golly gee I have, I love it.

    A couple from Europe 12 months ago, I'll spare you from any more, but I ended up with a very good supply of happy memories.

    Brave decision to embark on a 7 or so week trip to the other side of the world, buying a used "P&S with fixed lens". But it was the best decision I ever made.

    Gary,

    I'd love to see you render the nuns photo to monochrome, and maybe do a little cropping on the foreground.

    The Leica X series cameras are delightful. Just the thing for traveling. Now why did I lug a bag full of Sony A7 and three big Leica R lenses to Hawaii a couple of weeks back? I hardly did anything that I couldn't do with the X2... !

    Godfrey.
    I recall trying it, and deciding I liked the slight splash of colour here and there. But I'll try it again.
    Yes, the bag full of gear wears thin when you are traveling, this single small light camera was a revelation. Completely against my at the time logic, but this proved wrong.

    Leica X2 :: ISO 1600 @ f/4 @ 1/20 second

    Yes, definitely more fun back into picture taking lately. I'm still strapped for time, badly, but the simplicity and directness of the X2 stops me from having to think too much about what to use and engages me in what to shoot. And it's small and light enough that I have taken to carrying it, or one of the Ms with a lens, all the time again.

    First photo made with the X to post:

    Leica X typ 113
    ISO 1600 @ f/1.7 @ 1/2000

    Obviously, I'm poking about with stuff looking for the limits. Were I being serious, I'd have set ISO to 100 or 200 ... And I added grain and vignetting... ];-)

    enjoy!

    Loving this tiny X1, and while not the action camera of choice, it is always fun to use.
    Some fooling around in the sun and water after doing the lawns, then a cool refreshment.
    Neither are technically perfect, especially the moving shot, but what the heck, it's what I saw at the time, the smile says it all.

    Lunch yesterday: A simple sandwich at a local Starbucks Coffee plus a few snaps of the patrons sitting around me. I am not sure which was more fulfilling, but the photos last far longer. :-)

    Leica X :: ISO 100 @ f/1.7 @ 1/400 second

    I was impressed when I looked at my shots that the AF system worked so well. I was shooting wide-open, holding the camera sideways, using 11-point focus; the camera caught very close to the perfect focus plane every time. I couldn't even see the indicators on the LCD. That's quite satisfying AF performance IMO for such a narrow DoF.

    Gary,
    Thank you.
    X- Vario is an extraordinary camera. I use it when walking in the
    mountains and have no time to stop off. I take it with me for the ski
    mountaineering and actually everywhere where there's no time to stop
    off.

    Best.

    I'm finding the same with the X type 113.. !

    "Ground Signs" is a theme of 'found art still life' photos I worked on several years ago. The light and the parking lot pavement yesterday inspired me to create a new series in this theme for the first time in several years.

    All photos made with Leica X type 113. ISO settings from 100 to 800 as the light changed, all at f/3.5, and exposures varied from 1/25 to 1/160 second.

    I agree with this. Recently I have re-explored my Leica X2 and its so unobstrusive, easy to carry and fun to use.
    And the results - even if I can see more depth in M shots - the X shots are very nice and full of life.

    question to the Leica X/X-Vario crowd: do you use the display or the EVF?
    I often use the X2 just without EVF and it works better than I thought. I think using the display allows to have direct "eye-contact" to the subject.
    With the M I allways use the viewfinder.

    With X2 and X, I use the LCD display a good bit of the time, although I nearly always supplement it by having an optical viewfinder fitted as well.

    The optical viewfinder works very nicely on either camera with the camera set for zone focus or autofocus with the 11-point AF grid as long as the subject is reasonably simple and relatively all in the same plane. I don't find myself having to check too often.

    I fit the EVF when I know I'm going to need more versatility in getting the camera to the right position (low angles, copy stand, etc), when I'm going to be shooting wide open a lot and critical focus is important in a more complex scene, or if I'm mostly going to be using the lens near wide-open most of the time. That's when I switch the AF to 1-field or Spot setting, and/or use manual focus most of the time.

    Each of the viewfinders has its moments of advantage. Having all three at your disposal increases the camera's versatility.

    (With the X Vario I'd likely use the EVF a larger percentage of the time because of the zoom lens. I find an eye-level viewfinder assists in focusing and framing with lenses longer than 35-40mm by quite a bit, and helps you hold the camera more steadily too.)

    Leica X :: ISO 200 @ f/2.8 @ 1/60 sec

    I like these two as a diptych, but I think the individual frames are strong enough on their own.

    Thanks for looking. Your thoughts are welcome!

    Leica X typ 113
    ISO 3200 @ f/2.8 @ 1/25 sec

    Yes, I went to a Halloween party last evening... My costume was "Tourist in Hawaii", a perfect way to carry a camera and snap a bunch of pictures. ];-)

    Re: Fun with Leica X (all models)

    Very little time this past week to think photographically. In the scarce moments available, my eyes were caught by concrete. One of a set of four:

    Leica X :: ISO 1600 @ f/2 @ 1/60 sec

    The Concrete set: https://flic.kr/s/aHsk5r5USr

    Thanks for looking. Comments appreciated.

    enjoy,
