The Nikkor 200mm f4.0 micro is an amazingly sharp lens, and one of our favourite macro lenses, as it really allows one to isolate the subject wonderfully.

For other views refer to that by:

    Brad Hill,

    Bjorn Roerslett,

    5* B&H Photo rating.

The only alternative I can recommend is the 150mm Sigma.

We rarely use the 105 Nikkor now, as it is a bit too short.

first try at doing a "stacked" image- tiny flower - almost no depth of field - 8 images used to make this image

without stacking only tiny amount of image would have been in focus

seem like a lot of grief but try taking a close-up of a flower yourself and see how it comes out

Good shot - stacking is a very useful technique for flower photography, as you can retain a shallow depth of field look and yet have excellent detail.

    ok -

second attempt with the 200 and stacking

this is the flower of a palm tree- the actual flower are about the size of pin heads in real life - the "branch" being about 1/8" wide for your ref

    you can stack 2 ways

keep the lens fixed at some position and mount to a rail system moving the camera in steps or rotate the focusing ring bringing different parts of the image into focus.

the software web page recommended using the ring method over rail - unless you are taking images of near microscopic magnification.

reason being less distracting "artifacts" to clean up on image.

that cacti image cant be taken without stacking

I notice threads move very slow on this forum - I would have expected this thread to be buried in the abyss by now.
