Can a Canon do what a Ricoh can?

Short introduction: I read this forum since the start. Why? Because, in my opinion here it is about the pictures instead of the gear and when technical data is discussed it is because it is an added value. Especially on the canon section of the DP... forum, you can hardly discuss atmosphere and mood.

This forum surprised me with the mood and atmosphere of the pictures that (ricoh) members post. I am happy to know a few of the posters here.

Now: since it is about small sensors cameras I am curiuos to know if a (my) Canon G7 or a G9 can catch the mood that you people here catch with your Ricoh's!?

Please other Canon Gx Owners post your examples in the ricoh style and ricoh people please feel free to give me your honest opinions...

I'll start with a iso 3200 picture that is very capable of catching the mood and atmosphere of a 100 people theater in 200 people village in Michalowice, Poland (original size, iso3200, 1/160, f4.5, desaturated yellow wall in Lightroom)

    happy new year, ronald bunnik

My brother has got a Canon G9 and I think it is a very good camera. When I was going to buy a camera, I was considering it as well and I think I would also be happy with it although I might miss the wide angle.
But I think you can get great pictures with the Canon as well.

Incredible, ISO 3200 on a small camera. I think it looks good.
Personally, I think the camera is just a tool. The only difference in my opinion between the Ricoh and Canon cams is that Canon sells more cameras. They are generally more mainstream. Many people buy a better, more expensive camera to improve their photography. Technique and creativity are not sold with a camera though.

I guess the G-series are up with the Ricoh G-series. Olympus used to make wonderfull small sensor cameras as well. Unfortunately, high quality small sensor cameras are a niche market. So please post images from different cameras as well

I used to make photographs with a Canon as well, an A70.

There are differences among the cameras, for sure, but one could do work with a lot of different cameras.

    Cheers,

Canon does indeed make some fine small sensor cameras. Even the files from my original S100 Digital Elph look good, especially after a couple of minutes in LightZone. Here's a few:

    Swim Bus, 2005

    Hard Christmas, 1873

    Flag, August, 2005

Re: Can a Canon do what a Ricoh can?

Before I bought the Ricoh GX100, I just had a Canon Ixus 40. As I put in another thread, of course I notice a big difference in image quality and possibilities (controls) (but you can't compare a GX100 or G7/9 with an Ixus 40). I was very limited and the pictures mostly are not very sharp.
Still, I like some pictures which I took with it. Here are a few of them.

The pictures surely would be much sharper and better in detail etc. with the G-Series of both Canon and Ricoh and I would be very happy if I could have taken them with one of these newer and better cameras from Ricoh or Canon.

Here are some more of them:

Wink Re: Can a Canon do what a Ricoh can?

I've used an older p & s Canon for a number of my street snaps. It seems to work.

From the looks of things, quite a few of the cameras seem to work.

Re: Can a Canon do what a Ricoh can?

I love that picture,Will! Wouter is right: technique and creativity are not sold with a camera..
It does seem though that people that go out and buy a niche camera, already put in the effort in selecting one, and are therefor more likely to put in the extra efforts (technique , vision ) when taking pictures with it? The picture that will posted above is for me a prove of the mood and atmosphere of the pictures generaly posted here in the small sensor cameras forum... Keep these moody examples coming!

    Thanks for the compliment MisielekBunnik.

(Could someone explain to me in simple terms why my link to flickr doesn't work? Should I be adding something to it or taking something away? Why doesn't the image show up in the thread like other peoples do?)

You can use the Insert image button above the textbox. That is the little yellow button with the mountains. Or attach a file with the button Manage attachments. Good luck posting

Re: Can a Canon do what a Ricoh can?

i love my Ricohs (that's all i have), but often times envy the zoom on my boyfriend's G9. it wouldn't be the right camera for my style of shooting, but every now and again i wish i had that flexibility... while i think there is something distinct about the Ricoh shots (especially the original GRD), it really is more about the person behind it than the camera itself... i think it's great that there are so many choices so everyone can get one that feels right for them. that's the key -- having a love affair with your camera -- whatever brand or model you choose!

Thanks wbrandsma, see if it works this time.

    Apparently not.

Re: Can a Canon do what a Ricoh can?

Will -- If you are using the [img] tags, then just grab the url of the flickr photo. Of the two ways shown on flickr to post under your flickr photo, the url is the *bottom* one.

Also, given the formatting here, you might want to try a smaller size. A photo 1024 pixels in length would probably require most viewers to scroll to see it. (Your call, of course.)
