    May 1st Sony announcements?

New FE glass? New FF A-mount body? New FF A/E-mount body? Sony MFD? A reasonably priced wired remote for the A7/A7R?

    We shall see.

I don't expect a Sony MFD camera until Photokina at the earliest. I'd be happy to be wrong though.

    Wish list

    - A freaking 85mm equivalent at once!
    - Fast zoom for APS-C e-mount
    - Some nice pancakes for FE (I would looove a 40mm f2.0)

    Re: May 1st Sony announcements?

Maybe some news on the availability of the other lenses in the FE roadmap?

I'd be particularly interested in the availability of the wider primes and the wide zoom.

Me too. I've heard some rumblings about a 16-35 zoom, which I'd be very interested in.

I look forward to a Version II of the FE 24-70mm zoom that solves the optical issues of Version I (and costs 50-100% more).

    Re: May 1st Sony announcements?

There are the strange releases Sony will likely announce - I hope for another RX1 type camera, but it could be almost anything as the company competes in every market these days.

FE - it's about time for an 85mm or 100mm in f1.8 / f2 and it better be fabulous to stand out in a crowded field of excellent lenses past and present, and weigh around 350 grams max.

I have no need for a compromised wide angle with AF but others do so I hope Sony does better than the opposition if they go ahead with a 14-24/4 or 16-35/4, but the cost..and QC.

A 24mm f3.8, as good as Leica's Super-Elmar is what they should do instead. They could ask $1500 and people would pay.

Rumor has it that the next 'RX1' may be here as early as this summer, and pretty sure that Sony is already on record that an FE 85/1.8 is on the way. Sony continues to be very aggressive on the development side. I'm looking forward to seeing what they'll announce on the 1st.

A stabilized AF ZA 100/2.8 FE Macro Prime would light my fire.

But an AF FE 85/1.8 would be okay. Need a native FE mount portrait lens to make this system work for me better.

It'll be the A99 replacement, which is a mirrorless DSLR-style camera. It'll have the 50Mpx 44x33 sensor in it, and interchangeable mounts - one for A-mount, one for something medium-format. New? Standard? I don't know. A-mount lenses work in crop mode, getting 29Mpx.

    Re: May 1st Sony announcements?

Been reading a lot on the A6000 and sounds pretty good. The RX100 I just have no interest in although they are very nice. Good to see a upgraded lens though. I wanna be floored on this May1st announcement . My A7 might be on the block. Okay secretly been looking at the A6000 with the 16-70 f4 zoom at B&H for under 1400. Been debating about pulling the trigger on it and sell or trade the A7. I'll be in NY next week. I probably get 1100 on my A7 in trade. My one issue is as soon as I get home I have a 4 day event to shoot. So everything has to be in place. Waffling on this one as I would not go for the 24-70 than so I actually save money. Okay now go sell that idea to my wife as she will be with me in NY. LOL

The A6000 AF looks real promising, some really nice reviews on it I read last night.

I'd like to see something really cool, but I also have to say that if they come out with the RX100 mk3 that SAR describes, I would buy one.

    Re: May 1st Sony announcements?

Okay was just at Tempe Camera and they had a A6000 on display. Very cool AF for sure , so let's hope this tech jumps in future bodies. AFC was really nice. But it just seemed a little to small for me. But for the money don't look the other way, it's really really nice and maybe the best APS cam I have seen so far. Make a nice little backup and travel cam for sure. Looking forward to this announcement. We need glass for sure

Give me an A-mount version of the A7r. I'm sitting on a pile of A-mount glass, hate the a99, don't want an SLT adapter for A7r. Arrrgghhh... I'm not confident that the A-mount isn't dead & abandoned (albeit a slow death), but I'd be overjoyed to be proven wrong.

Well no doubt a A77 replacement is going to be announced. Even though its APS it still takes the A mount

Read up a lot on this one too and ordered one, should be here next week. Still wanting to see what people think of the 16-70 on it; lots of cash for a lens I'm not sure about yet ...

This is interesting just got this notice from B&H and read the 16-70 was discontinued elsewhere . Now not sure what announcements may happen but this may have something that relates to this.

Thanks for the heads up. It's an interesting focal length range but I still think the price is way beyond what people expect an f/4 zoom to cost for APS-C. I'd pay 500€ for it, not double.

    Re: May 1st Sony announcements?

Haha, I've go a great 85mm, the Pentax M 85mm f2, tiny cheap lens with far nicer rendition than my canon 85mm 1.8 ever managed. I do however need a wide though and have pursuaded myself that I'm best off waiting to see if the sony 16-35mm is worth the astronomical price they're bound to ask for it. If the corners are good I'll probably stump up the cash whatever it is. The question is will they be?

    Re: May 1st Sony announcements?

SAR's latest posting almost guarantees an announcement of the 85mm and WA zoom.

I am so ambivalent about the zoom. I need something wider than my FE 35, and I know there is a Zeiss 21 (24?) coming. Probably quite compact. The rumored 16-35mm is very useful, but it will probably be a bit bulky and expensive.

I was super excited about the A7s when rumors were saying it would cost the same as an A7. If it´s more than us$2k I´m out...so I´m probably out.

Dan, there are wider and there are longer and there are faster lenses coming. Sony is quite serious about developing out this line as fast as they can is the word I am getting. This is the future likely of the whole Alpha line.

Chuck, understood. I currently have the FE 35, 55 and 70-200. I'm still lacking in the WA ranges. I've been using my Nikon 16-35 F4 w/Novaflex, which works well, but I want something with AF and VR/OSS.

I'm undecided to get the Sony WA zoom or wait for a prime. It would be great if they at least gave us a firmer roadmap this Wednesday.

My shot is: FE 85mm f1.8 - $900-1000 - based on the generally well-received FE55, which it will look like and feel like, similar weight too. Sony's designers are very big on bokeh for FE primes - they are fans of the Summilux series.

It will need to be special to succeed well, as almost all short teles are excellent, so no CA and care to minimise LoCA, and great from wide open. AF (very important at this FL) and native mount will win them the day for a lot of FE users, and it completes a very good three lens setup for Leica type shooters: FE35/FE55/FE85.

I can't say anything nice about the WA zoom idea. They are all big, heavy and costly, not what FE needs. A WATE would be great however.

I'm definitely interested in the 16-35 zoom, though it'll have to be excellent to get me to buy one before I see what Zeiss has in store for us later this year.

Given the number of things now expected on the 1st (A77II, RX100mk3, FE UW zoom, FE 85mm) I'd be pretty surprised if my crazy "MF A99 replacement" idea is one of them.

doesn't make sense. They would announce more popular primes before 85mm focal length. A wide angle or a 90mm

Doubt it, an 85mm lens together with a 50mm and 35mm make up the most popular prime focal lengths. They already have the other two so...

A high meg A99 replacement that takes ZAs and other lenses seems pretty big news to waste in a Photokina year.

Oh course, if they got it why not flaunt it? Sure would gut Canon/Nikon releases for Photokina.

WHAT THEY NEED IS A SMALL, POWER-PACKED, FULLY ARTICULATED SPEED-LIGHT FOR THE FE MOUNT CAMERAS! If it were radio controlled like the Canon 600s, all the better.

IMO, this one omission will keep the entire system from being widely thought of as a serious replacement for the wedding/event cameras from Canon/Nikon … or any photographer that uses a speed-light for a bit of fill to balance out contrast.

Don't really care about a 16-35 zoom, I rarely use the ZA one I already have, making it a crummy value for what it costs.

A FE 85/1.8 is another matter. The ZA85/1.4 is a screw drive AF lens and a bit slow on the LEAE-4 adapter. A real coup would be if the FE85 version were stabilized.

While I'm also waiting for the w/a zoom lens, I hope they do not make the typically 16-35. If their goal is size combined with IQ, a 16-28 F4 or a 14-24 F4 would be easier to make. Many A7 photographers already have the 35mm focal length, either with the 35mm prime, the 24-70 zoom or both.

And I really, really hope that the IQ is better than of the 24-70F4. The new 70-200 seems to be good.

I´ve stopped trying to get Sony. They are about to release the A77II and it has 79 af points, 15 cross points. I would think it would use the same "fastest AF in the world" system of the A6000.

I'm sure they were developed by entirely different team being released so close to one another. There may also be some sensors variations necessary due to the translucent mirror. Who knows though - maybe on announcement day the specs will be exactly the same as the A6000 but maybe there are performance improvements that we don't see on the spec sheet like AF accuracy.

It's the thing that irritate me the most about Sony AF lenses with smaller apertures. My 55/1.8 FE noticeably is faster to lock and more accurate than the 24-70/4 FE when in lower light situations. In bright daylight to daybreak/ dusk situations there's no issues though. I don't know that other systems have those issues. I never had pro quality lenses on my Canon system and my Panasonic Micro 4/3 were relatively quick and accurate with all the lenses I owned. Admittedly I owned all of the better ones that were available at the time I owned it as my primary system (2008-2010.)

Yes, it will be interesting to see what Sony releases on the 1st. I think I reached the AF limits of the a900 at least for kids flag football games. I could do without 12 fps as long as the camera has a better AF system. Why does Sony think that people need 12 fps if the AF can't keep up with the frame rate?

Rawfa, the fast focusing in the a6000 isn't for spot focusing, but more for wider focusing is what I read. Like you though, I would really like Sony to ramp up their production and become a bigger player in the camera market.

I agree that a 14-24 would be a much more useful zoom to me personally for a few reasons. First it would allow me to get rid of the FE 24-70/4 and my Rokinon 14/T3.1 as I got it solely because I NEED something wider than 35 at times but not as wide as 14 all the time. The FE35 and FE55 perform worlds better than the FE24-70. I prefer primes in those focal ranges and a 35 and 50-ish can take care of 60-70% of what I shoot for myself. There's also a faster FE35 rumored to be released later this year which would be great news for me even if it's a bit larger. Throw in a fast 21/24 and a fast 85-105 macro (with a focus limit switch)/ portrait lens and I'm set 100%on a kit.

The FE70-200/4 seems good enough for when I need AF from what I can tell at web resolution so I can happily sell my 1st generation Alpha 70-200/2.8 since size is my only hangup with this lens. I have a nice set of Zeiss Contax fast primes between 85mm and 180mm with apertures between f/1.4-2.8 for portraits plus I prefer manual focus or as least non-focus by wire lenses for portraits.

I agree with the notion that I wish more flash makers supported Sony systems close to the same level as they do Canon and Nikon. The last week has left me scratching my head of whether or not some of the wireless systems will or won't work with Sony cameras out the box without mods or extra equipment.
