Cannot believe I am posting this!

I started playing with a format in CS4 that has become rather addictive...
I am not sure that it will work on a small JPG but here goes.

Please ignore the overblown signature....it evolved with the development and I have not had time to figure out how to revise it...or eliminate it completely.

I do like the way the windows draw the eye in regards to the pictures...not everything works and that is part of the challenge.

Well... It's unique! And I don't hate it. But for a regular image format, I think it might get old. Looks like it would make a great book cover though -- ???

Yes, I wondered about Title Page or Section Headings with regular pics based on the initial pictures to follow...more like a PDF In Design project.

Have revised them all without the signature...much better. This format was described in Scott Kelby's PS CS4 book and I like the clipping mask format with smart objects as it is easy to trial different photos.

    Here are the revised pics:

I saw one done as 4x4 panel from a Paris marketplace printed pretty large and loved it. So, I think it can be effective.

It's a stand alone look. Like a cover or even a banner for marketing yourself.

4x4 panel may allow a better perspective size with more viewable area...I will have to try it in a large print.

    Thanks,

I am sure that you are correct. That is why I felt the original posts seemed inappropriate to me.

Actually in Scott Kelby's book the caption included "Photography" so I assume that it was a marketing idea.

I need to find an ideal perspective ratio to see if it will work for the occasional intro picture or cover...so that more is devoted to the picture and less to the caption for my personal work.

    Thanks Guy.

Re: Cannot believe I am posting this!

Your welcome Bob . To me it looks more like a entry point to your body of work than the body of work itself. If you know what I mean. Say for instance to me it is a nice cover of a brochure that promotes you and I see it as the cover than the inside a more presented look of your work in stand alone images or something like that or even a book style as the cover . I do graphic design on the side and that is the flow i get from it.

Actually Bob glad you brought this up because this is really a important issue for folks maybe wanting to do a blurb book or some piece of marketing for themselves. Presentation is everything, so I think a great post. I actually wish more members would post like this and ask the question is this stupid or valid on stuff like this, great way to get different perspectives of how things are viewed. You know the saying never a dumb question well expand that never a dumb post if your looking for answers.

Re: Cannot believe I am posting this!

Thanks Guy....so the question morphs to:

    White space and visual appeal.

Have you found an ideal or workable percentage of surround in terms of white space to picture for both portrait and landscape orientation that scales regardless of final size?

IOW for a 3/4 format picture at 12x16 what margins or matte seem to have the most appropriate visual appeal in the two orientations...from both print and blurb perspective where in the latter you need to "supply the surround" that is lacking as the picture exists only in the ether and has not matte nor frame. Do you prefer signing the white space or the bottom of the picture? And does the margin work at different ratios ie 2x3, 5x7 or 6x6 or is some other percentage of more appeal?

I assume that this could fill a decent sized chapter in a book but I have found very little discussion of the esthetics involved in the above.

Really no rule of thumb here or at least i don't know a written one off hand. To me it is visual. I have to play around with something like this on the spacing. Not a great answer I know but having a very visual background this is how I create. One of those things when we do the workshops i can't explain but certainly can show you in the field in camera or on computer in training. I just can't talk it out, it's a show me. LOL

Thats how I have been doing it. I save templates to refer to when the perspective appeals to me.

I have been doing this for some time now, preparing for a large Gallery event in Vegas to also benefit a charity for abused children and woman.

I really like what you are doing with this images, very organic fill to them.

Thanks for your interest Bob, it will be early 2010, in one of the Casino's Hall here in Vegas, quite a large event, even so my first, I'll be sure to post here when dates are looked down, and offer special deals on Rooms for those that like to attend, and or participate with any of their Art as well.
