What are your $500 - $1,000 ‘Bang for the Buck’ lenses?

You specified light weight so I left out excellent porky lenses that fit in that price range (e.g., Pentax 67 55mm f/4 3rd edition). Here are some to get started:

$500 to $1,000 includes modification work (but you have to shop for a good price as these can be overpriced):

1. Mamiya G 50mm f/4 L. Allows 15mm of shift on 33mm x 44mm. Good at f/4 and excellent from f/5.6.
2. Mamiya N 65mm f/4 L . Allows ~20mm of shift on 33mm x 44mm. Excellent from f/4
3. Mamiya G or N 150mm f/4.5 L. Optics identical or very close. Very sharp telephoto that is also relatively light.

No modification needed
1. Schneider-Kreuznach APO-Symmar 100mm f/5.6. Great value for a slightly longer lens. Price is right on the bubble (can be < $500).
2. Schneider-Kreuznach APO-Componon HM 90mm f/4.5 in Makro Iris. Excellent lens, basically the same as APO-Digitar 90/4.5

Any Rodenstock lens from APO Sironar-S / Sironar Digital lines with focus length starting 100 mm and up.
My personal top favorite is APO Sironar-S 135mm f5.6.

The only APO Sironar-S 135mm f5.6 I could find on ebay was knocking on US$2000! I'd love to know where I could get one for less than US$1000...

ageee. I have the SW 65/4 and 90/f4.5 and W 180/5.6 And love them.
I've got a complete set too. Tried to sell them as a package on here but minimal interest. I've also got a set of Pink Bodies.

Nikon Nikkor W 180mm f5.6
Nikon Nikkor W 150mm f5.6 S
Nikon Nikkor W 105mm f5.6 S
Nikon Nikkor SW 75mm f4.5 S
Nikon Nikkor SW 65mm f4 S

@John Leathwick - I think that the Sironar Digital 135mm and the Sironar S are in fact the same lens, or maybe very slightly modified for the field flatness.
The Sironar Digital 135mm flavour is quite often available for under $1000 and around $500-600 USD if not in a copal shutter (for example as a Sinaron Digital in a Sinar electronic CMV, CAB or DB mounts)
So, if someone needs a Sironar-S 135 lens, they may as well use a 135mm Digital version from Sinar or Rodenstock.

From Rodenstock's lens brochures:

The flange focal length/distance of the Apo-Sironar-S 135mm lens (with Copal 0) is 132.0mm.

The flange focal length/distance of the Apo-Sironar digital 135mm lens (with Copal 0) is 132.0mm.

The identical value for the flange focal lengths is good evidence that the optical construction of the two lenses is identical.

The front filter rim of the digital lens was extended forward a little to reduce the potential for flare. The same can be achieved with the Apo-Sironar-S by adding a short lenshood.
