    Talking A7r - and why I'm keeping it ...

... but I have to get it first!

I know. I will post some in due course though!

Here is an interesting thought! Is Sony the New Leica? | Leica BOSS

From where did you order yours?

I bet B&H is the first to start shipping if the FE 35 is any indication.

Thanks Lou. I ordered directly from SonyUSA. Sony now says in my account:

    "Preparing for Shipment
You can expect to receive your item(s) between 12/1/13 7:00 PM and 12/1/13 7:00 PM.
    "
The grip I also ordered is listed as Backordered.

The status of the FE 35 lens, that I ordered later, is listed as Processing.

    Where did you order yours?
    With best regards, K-H.

I tried first with B&H and there was a shipping mixup with my account (for some strange reason) so I immediately went to Adorama the morning after the announcement. Could have been a mistake as B&H seems to be getting what Adorama is not getting. A7r and grip showing backordered on Adorama.

Well at least I'll have a FE35 lens to look at and wonder how it will performs-sent from B&H today.

    Hi Lou,

You better hang on to that lens!
Do you have any NEX camera to play with that lens?

Nope, my first Sony lens and no cameras to mount it on. What the heck, another week or two and I should have an a7r..

    Re: A7r - and why I'm keeping it ...

Sadly, I am left in the lurch as well, as my local store only received A7's. I am struggling with which way to go, as it seems that the A7 may be better in a few ways (with RF's), less shutter vibration, 24 mp file sizes are more manageable for me) than the A7R, though I MUCH prefer an AA-less camera, as I am detail freak....

Well, I guess I have more time to figure things out while I watch from the sidelines. That being said, I have already tasted the A7R and was quite satisfied for my style of shooting...

    Re: A7r - and why I'm keeping it ...

    Hi Ashwin,

Owning both M9 and D800E I am only considering the A7R.
I shoot mostly landscapes and wildlife, so I love 36 MP and no filter.
Your shooting style is really different, I understand.

Having also an E-M1 with 5-axis IBIS, I am also looking forward to the future when an A7/R like camera with IBIS will be available. I will shoot my A7R either on a tripod or handheld faster than 1/(3*FL).

BTW, on the E-M1 IBIS works so well that handheld I can shoot static objects with an exposure time approaching one second and get useable images that are pretty much in focus. Utterly amazing, I find.

Good luck with getting your camera!
    With best regards, K-H.

I'm still weighing the Sony option and think I'll rent one first. But knowing the way my mind works, I'm pretty sure if I got the A7 I would always be thinking, what if.... Plus, after using an M8, M9 and GR, I'm definitely hooked on no AA.

I don't think of it as more detail or sharpness, but rather a greater clarity or cleanness. In fact I'm pretty sure I won't buy another camera with an AA filter.

I think you're in a great position since you did try out the A7r. Maybe try out the A7 at the local shop and see how it compares then decide which works best for you. I myself ordered an A7 last night... I'm getting a A7r as well too though. I think it may be the last body I buy for awhile (short of upgrading to a newer M or FE mount body.)

Hi Tre, just did that....and it's close. I went back and looked at my A7R shots....they are solid, but when zoomed in, there's a bit of motion blur. The A7R really requires steady, steady hands. I suspect that the A7 would be plenty camera for me, and yet, there's a whisper, as JohnW states, to want to upgrade. Unlike you, I am only going to snag one of these 2 bodies...The good thing is...both are great, when used within their tolerances...I have a slight lean at the moment towards the A7, as I think it's sensor may be more forgiving...and yet lol....

From what I can tell from most everything I have read, your a7 for candid and street seems the best alternative. The a7r I will get and if I keep it, I will probably use it mostly on tripod for landscape with R lenses.

    Re: A7r - and why I'm keeping it ...

Ultimately I went with A7 (should arrive Monday) for most of the same reasons Ashwin has mentioned (I like RF glass, don't need 36Mp, etc).

Also like you Ashwin I really can live without an AA filter, but until Sony (or someone else) gives us a FF ILC that really has no AA filter, to me it's certainly not worth paying so much extra just for that.

Yeah I hear you. I wasn't going to get both but I'm about 99% sure my M9-P finally developed a sensor crack, I'm selling some old gear I rarely use to finance the extra body, and I really don't like to be without 2 bodies when I shoot primes. I think the A7 is plenty and the A7r is more for that extra wow for larger/ more detailed prints.

Do you have already a battery charger? The Sony A7 does not came with a battery charger included in the package.

Do you need a charger? You can charge the cam on any USB device, like in your car. It's like an iPhone. I have it for a week now and didn't miss the charger. Back in the car and charge it. I needed the spare though, as in Standby it depleted for some reason 2 times.

And during the five hours needed to recharge the battery inside the camera...? Either you have a spare camera or you have just to wait.

<$5 for the charger (shipped). "Hot" posted earlier for the NEX users.

As I learn more about the two cameras, the A7 seems the right choice for your style of photography. Look forward to your views on how it works as a BW street camera.

Yes, I did pick up an after market charger from bh photo as well . This way, I can have one battery charging while I use the camera, with afully charged backup battery along for the ride....plus if I bring 3 charged batteries, I am nearly guaranteed 900-1000 shots in 1 session (wedding, etc)

    Re: A7r - and why I'm keeping it ...

a few things i like so far a7r:

menus are straightforward (for this kind of camera)
size and feel is great, repeat: great
35mm lens seems very nice, trim
    can't wait for C1
it will be fantastic with longer fl leica lenses: 28 cron looks good, but i have been too busy to be analytical ( i am well versed with LCC adjustments, so i don't see a problem here, but the 50 and 75 cron will be so easy to get focus with manual focus with the mag and peaking works just as it should
    EVF is quite nice

Did you receive it yet? Mine shipped today-might see it Friday. Got the FE 35 today to see how the AF works. Decided to get the dual charger for the batteries as I imagine it will come in handy when out for most of the day with grip.

I might just try the R 15/2.8 first.

    Lou,

I can't wait to see how the R 15/2.8 does on the A7R. You worked some magic with that lens on our Everglades trip last spring. Like you, my FE 35mm arrived today and the A7R should arrive on Thursday or Friday. I am looking forward to it.

FedEx called today that they need a signature tomorrow for the A7R.
Hopefully they don't show up too late.
FE 35/2.8 lens and battery grip should arrive 1 or 2 days later.

Well, from my NEXs I have 2 chargers and 6 batteries. That ought to do it.

If you buy a charger and batteries ahead of the arrival of your A7/A7r, make sure that you charge it up on the power cord the first time, so that the internal battery can charge up. I found this out the hard way.

Looks like you will be stuck at home a good part of the day unless they come early. As you already have plenty of charged batteries and probably know the menu better than anyone, with luck we should see some red rocks appearing on our monitors very soon. I am going to re-calibrate my monitor in anticipation.

    Thanks Lou,

Which lens to test first? Which lens to test first? Which lens to test first?

    Ah, decisions, decisions, decisions ...

So, I probably would like a success first! Hmm? Maybe start with

    Noct Nikkor 58/1.2 or
    Vario-Elmarit-R ASPH 28-90/2.8-4.5 or
Tri-Elmar-M ASPH WATE 16-18-21/4 or an oldie but goodie
    Rigid Summicron 50/2?

    What do you suggest?

    With best regards, K-H.

Post some gear shots with all the lenses. I don't think I've seen vario elmarit-r shots yet.

Thanks. IIRC Bart de Vries (alias Knorp) showed some. Here is Bart's post: http://www.getdpi.com/forum/550420-post314.html

    Re: A7r - and why I'm keeping it ...

I received my A7R few days ago to use it with m-mount lenses exclusively. First quick snaps show that everything 50mm and longer should be fine on it (I used it with the ZM 50 Sonnar, lux 50 asph, Summarit 75, AA 90 Cron). However, the Summicron 35 asph and Elmarit 24 are not up to what I need. The 24 Elmarit @f8 and stopped down further is ok, but f2.8 and F4 are not satisfactory. The colors with the 35 Summicron are all over the place, I won`t bother with it on the A7r again. I`m interested in others experiences with 35mm RF lenses on the A7r. It seems the CV f1.2 35 does fine, but it is too bulky for my liking. I will try the Summilux 35 asph (not FLE) over the weekend, but do not expect too much after the Summicron 35 experience.

It's like after 3pm now. You got it?

For me try the 28-90 R or the WATE M first.

Thanks Lou. The battery is charging now!
However, it will be dark when it's finished.
    But, we think alike!

Something very interesting to read while we wait! Hot news! Panasonic and Fuji developed the first organic sensor! | 43 Rumors
Maybe it won't be that long until all of our M lenses can be used on a non-Leica camera!
I certainly have no plans to sell any of my lenses!

BTW, the battery grip also arrived. The FE 35/2.8 lens should arrive tomorrow.
    With best regards, K-H.

Good news on the grip as I was thinking we would be lucky to get it this month. Great news. Does the grip actually feel as good as it looks like it should?

    Re: A7r - and why I'm keeping it ...

So, I have been playing around all evening with the A7R trying to discover its user interface.

I think it shares a few principles with the E-M1, e.g. example two menu systems.
One complete menu and the other with just some essentials.
Of course, the details, in particular the menus themselves are different.
Very nice though. I think the A7R and I will get along just fine.
But I miss IBIS as it eliminates the shaking while manually focusing handheld.
Next step for me will be to systematically work through the manuals with camera in hand and memorizing a few new things.

First I mounted the Carl Zeiss Sonnar E 1.8/24 ZA, an APS-C lens, to gain some experience with autofocus.
Then I used the Leica Vario-Elmarit-R ASPH 28-90/2.8-4.5 to get a feel for how magnification is invoked for manual only lenses.
That seems to feel more natural than for example the UI on the NEX-5N or NEX-7. Great!

I also used the camera with and without the battery grip.
The battery grip might come in handy when shooting handheld.
    I don't think I will use it a lot on a tripod.
It doesn't seem to get in the way, but it also doesn't seem to add a lot, except a second battery.

The Novoflex NEX/LER adapter works well with the ASTAT-NEX tripod mount.
When using the camera handheld it's more ergonomic to take off the ASTAT-NEX tripod mount.

Tomorrow if the sun comes back out I will see what image quality the A7R manages to deliver with some of my lenses.
    The fun finally begins!

    With best regards, K-H.

I should have mine this afternoon from Adorama along with the 35mm lens. I purchased a Voightlander E mount from CameraQuest which got to me in two days. Seems very high quality - all I care about is that its flat, flat, flat. I have a full assortment of Leica M glass that I'm eager to try.

This is a little old news (dating back in June).
A more recent rumor, floated at 43rumors, is that Panasonic and Leica will launch a new system together. The previous rumor was that Leica would join the MFT consortium, but second the last rumors they will use a new mount not an MFT mount.

Combining the two news/rumor, the organic sensor in a new Leica/Panasonic system could result in something interesting.

My Adorama order shows the label was printed on 3 Dec, but still UPS shows no activity under the tracking number. I do believe Adorama is exaggerating with this. If they can print a label and weigh the box, why can they not get it to UPS within 24 hours? We are now 48 hours plus!

Looks miserable out there right about now. Hey, what adapter do you use for M lenses, R lenses, etc.?

Very nice. I thought that scene looked familiar. Took this shot from about the same spot 10 years ago.
