    A7s!

I've just read on sonyalpharumors that Sony will release a new FE camera on Sunday called A7S. I'm very very curious, but I'm guessing it will probably be just some additional focus points, maybe some new video codec (or 4K, which would be awesome)....or maybe just a regular A7 with a traditional DSLR body.

    Re: A7s!

I'll take it specs unknown. It would have to have more AF points like the A6000. That's enough for me. I may not order the kit lens now and wait the weekend

    Re: A7s!

A6000 AF would be nice (although the A7 already has 117). There are a LOT of people shooting videos with DSLR these days, so it would not surprise me at all if this was a 4K camera to compete with the GH4. If this is the case and if the price is right I would buy it in a heartbeat. What intrigues me is where will this product be place? The price difference between the A7 and the A7R is already small, so it would be kind of strange to have a product in between.

    Re: A7s!

Speaking of AF, is it true that shutting off face recognition in the A7 (r), greatly aids in AF lock - on (especially under low light conditions) and possibly helps tracking as well? I'm not sure if this has been discussed previously?

I've never heard it discussed in the context of wearing a helmet...LOL! Use of a frying pan, maybe!

I know that look all too well and am now perminantly conditioned to it and the resulting consequences .

As an aside, I now see someone has started a separate thread on possible impact of face recognition on A7 (r) AF speed, lock-on.

Yes, I am intrigued as to what Sony would call an A7 that has the RX1R sensor in it. I would prefer that to getting a A7r just because of file size. I know this sounds strange but having owned the Ricoh GR I am now very much sold on cameras without the AA filter but in two minds about having a 36mpx body.

The link has been updated and it has been confirmed that the biggest new is that the camera will shoot 4K.

    Re: A7s!

One would wonder if the AF points are also updated with that. Im not really after the 4k myself but I did play with video the other day as I need to shoot some for a job next week. It turns out with my longest lens the 135 1.8 with Sony 4 adapter I cane go to crop mode but i have to do manual focus as I pick up the sound of the focusing gears with the 135 F1.8 and the only way to adjust aperture is on manual focus with this lens. Anything AF it goes to F3.5 only. I also learned to use auto ISO as well. Its a little bit of a handicap without the AF even though on AFC it works pretty good. But until I get a native FE long lens this is the option I have. No one has tested this but I wonder if the A6000 with the Sony 4 adapter for ZA lenses works more effectively where one can adjust the aperture.

Unless it has added AF features on the still side of things. Have to wait and see what the real specs are on it.

It always pays to wait when you're dealing with Sony equipment because they ship a baziliion different things and versions of things faster than you can write a check.

Until they discontinue something good in favor of something glitzier and more mediocre. Then you have to run to buy it before everyone is out of stock.

I stand by with the A7 for a bit yet.

    Re: A7s!

The original Canon 5D was in that realm... 12.8 MP if I recall correctly.

That was the first digital camera I purchased. I waited for a FF sensor camera to come out before I 'bit'.

I can't imagine how much better this one must be compared to that; what does 9 years of sensor development get you?

12mpx. Geez talk about going back to bygone days. LOL

Probably great for video though and that is a big market. Actually a smart move for Sony. They way they are spitting out cams its just a matter of time and it will be a short one no doubt. 50mpx would make me happy, of course i may need a Otus than. ROTFLMAO

    Re: A7s!

Vis a vis the Sony philosophy of product update: I know Sony only from working in video production and post-production, starting in the late 70s. They usually introduced some sort of ground-breaking product and six months later would introduce a revised version of that product, the only difference being one really necessary feature that had been omitted from the original. The A7s sounds like that.

It seems their marketing claim will be something like:

"4k video with world's best ISO performance and world's fastest AF".

So it's a modern take on the PJ camera, thereby rounding the a7 range out nicely.

I won't be buying one unless it tracks like a 1dx or a D4/s but you can't fault the speed at which this is turning into a real system.

A new 12Mp FF sensor. With fatter and perhaps nicer pixels.
But I guess it would not be sufficient enough for me, while enlarging for seeing worn details on Buildings. But for inside or evening shots cleaner high ISO's it would be, which could be nice.

    Re: A7s!

IMO, that would heavily depend on the quality of pixels, as well as the applications.

The old Canon 1Ds was 11.1 meg but that was ancient sensor tech that suffered badly from noise.

I admit to being curious about a small "fat pixel" FF camera for candid low light work. With the newer gapless CMOS technology, I wonder how big the pixels are?

Seriously I think it is a very dangerous place in many ways. My privacy is mine not the freaking worlds. I really try and keep my wife and myself far away from it and the gossip. My wife has had big health issues and that is something we keep far away from Facebook.

I'm certainly curious as well and see what this thing may have under its hood. Hard not to be curious at least but even more important for us working Pros with the market sliding south and it's happening to me next week is I am shooting part of a job with video. So to stay relevant to the market as a still shooter we may just have to take video on to put food on the table. In the past I have turned some work down because of video. More important though if we need it we have the glass for it mostly and we could always rent it too. End of day glad its out here to get access to it.

    Re: A7s!

Now this could work for me and the big runway shows I do twice a year as 12 mpx is plenty to sell 8x12 images online. I used the A7 in crop mode which knocks it down to 16 I believe so it is certainly workable here. Question really is would it be far better than the A7 in crop mode. Problem is I still need a 300 mm lens on it. Guess we will see what advantage if any this could have.

    Re: A7s!

Honestly speaking, A6000 will have a big big use with me than this A7s definitely, i am a sports say soccer shooter, so i need faster fps than better video capability.

But, can i use my Canon long lens on A6000 with adapter without affecting fast AF? I don't think i will buy Sony 300/400 lens if they have already.

Tareq, my A6000 went back very quickly. Sure it focusses fast but it doesn't track effectively enough for sport IMHO, though it might be that merely using non tracking AF is fast enough for some subjects.

I just saw your thread here about A6000, and thanks for that, as i shouldn't risk buying it for nothing much, and i was thinking if i can use a lens direct to it without an adapter it may keep the AF speed fast enough.

Well, then i will stay with Canon then
