FUJIFILM GFX 50S, 50R, 100, etc. ... Peculiarities

I’ll be swapping my GF250 for this GF500 (pre-ordered).
Always found 250mm somehow too short to my liking. Oh well …
Thank you Bart and Lou.

Well I'll keep all my lenses and the 1.4x TC and will add the 500.
So 500 mm for MF corresponds to about 400 mm in 135 film.
And using the 1.4x TC gives close to 560 mm equivalent...

I signed up with B&H in NYC to let me know when that lens is in stock.
IIRC they expect first shipments of that lens around June 17, 2024.
I will try to get one as soon as possible.

I am still sitting on the fence whether to get the GFX 100 II or 100S II.
Their sensor readout time of 1/10 s is a turn off.

I know the sensor readout time for my GFX 50S is even slower, IIRC about ⅓ s.
For landscape that works but not really for anything moving.

Right now I am following with interest that folks are getting from the Sony A9 III and FE 300/2.8 GM.

Pretty impressive, no?

Thank you Bart for the links.

Lately I have been shooting my Sony tele-lenses without TC.
In my experience the 1.4x TC is fine on my FE 400/2.8 GM.
I have given up on using the 2x TC for the time being.

300 mm is a bit short for biding, especially on an A9 III with 24 MP.
So the FE 300/2.8 GM is of interest because of its low eight.
It would only make sense for birding if it would perform also well with the 1.4x and 2x TC.
I would think the 1.4x TC should be fine.
Otherwise my FE 200-600/6.5-6.3 G OSS wins.

According to the jury (Mr Kasson) you are better off IRT IQ without TC by cropping instead and so save on weight and money.
To quote myself: I do have the 1.4x TC and despite Mr Kasson's wise words I think it works just fine on the GF250.
So hopefully it will do as well on the GF500 ... 🤞

Thank you Bart, I agree.
I read through the review you pointed to.
At the end there was this link.

Interesting.

Fuji really needs a sensor from Sony with a really fast sensor readout speed or a really short readout time.

IMX461
is the medium format version (identical pixel architecture) to the IMX455 used in the A7R5. All issues with regard to performance are due to:
a) size
b) processing
It is a more modern sensor than the IMX251 in the A7R3.

So the exact same rant as the 100II marketing, got it. We all know this by now.

I personally won't be making excuses on their behalf. I use their cameras and many of their excellent lenses. They need to do better in terms of marketing.

Wha t is the sensor readout performance/time?

About 1/10s full frame.
With line skipping can go as fast as 1/4000s for 0.02megapixels.

GFX 50S + GF120mm F4 R LM OIS WR Macro @ 120 mm (95 mm in 35mm), f/4, 1/30 s, ISO 3200.
Denoised with DxO PR4, Silver Rich Grain added in Capture One. :D

Ordered the 100SII and also the 500. Often I found the 250 a bit short even with 1.4x.
Good show, Lou !
Despite its awesome IQ I too find the GF250 a bit short and - dare I say - rather unwieldy, especially with the TC.
Most of the time a took instead the excellent GF100-200, shorter perhaps but more manageable and practical.
I think a GF150-400 or so would close the gap nicely.
One can only hope ...

Does anyone remember who the guy was, back when Fuji first introduced either the 50 or the 50R when took his review camera out to Utah and White Pocket if I remember correctly? I am looking to contact the woman guide who took him out there to shoot. He did a utile video and Fuji must have sponsored him.
