Michiel, thank you. I was trying for a night image, but shooting while there is some light in the sky to give detail in the shadows.I like it much. But I love urban photography. What is for you the experiment? That it is B&W or the POV? I like the point of view very much, the buildings straight up, nicely layered with a lot happening with the diagonals on the ground and a nice sky.
It does, especially the sky, make me a bit curious how it would look in color.
It is more complicated in color. Because this is dusk, the sky in the unprocessed image is quite bright, which is why I can get so much detail in the "shadows" of the buildings. Monochrome hides some of the processing that is going on. Blue skylight is very dominant. It became really hard to push the contrast and keep the color natural--it either oversaturates or undersaturates. Even in B&W, the transition from the buildings to the sky looks unnatural to me. And while it has plenty of detail in the shadows, it is a bit flat and funny looking--it isn't night or dusk. And the more I look at this image, the stranger it feels. I actually took this a number of month ago and could not quite gel with it. It just kind of worked with the images I posted this week on my blog.
