Fun with X1D

Howard, if you could do a group FaceTime with us, we could direct you more precisely! :ROTFL:

Beautiful picture. I love the ones on your website by the way. You will need to update your bio though to let people know you are now using the X1D though!

I like it as the fence line will start the line but it also cleans up the trees on the horizon. I tend to fret about
partial tree branches entering from the side of a view ... would rather have the tree cropped in the frame ... perhaps 50% ...
rather than branches just appearing from out of it.

Yes a bit OCD I know I know I know ...

OK, one for Bob and one for Keith.

X1D with XCD 90 at f/16. [Note: for anyone looking at the image on a 4K monitor, the color is NOT properly managed in Google Chrome. It looks fine in Safari.]

Lovely.

I'd take out a little of the blue cast. It's a bit too heavy to my eye. :)

Godfrey, the heavy blue cast is not there in the original in PS on my color calibrated 4K monitor. However, there is a heavy blue cast when I look at the image in Google Chrome on my 4K monitor. Strangely, it's not there when I use Safari. What monitor and browser are you using? I have had these color management issues with images on the internet before, most notably when my website was a flash site.

Some fun rainy night pics from NYC last night! I tried to handhold down to 1/15th with the 45mm to get some motion blur from the car lights, but between the rain and wind and holding the umbrella, the lowest I could get a consistent stable image was 1/40th. Also included some blurred lights in the background because I remember someone posting a comment about that a while ago. Don't remember the exact context, but may have been a Diglloyd reference? I kept the camera dry, but I got soaked. :facesmack:

Very nice, Josh. I am very curious how the X1D would handle the rain. Can you please experiment with that with your X1D and let us know how it goes? :ROTFL:

I'm happy to, though if I break it and yours goes missing... :toocool:

I'm out for a while, but I'll look up the exposure setting when I get home. I'd guess 1/40th at 3.5 at 800 ISO though.

Yeah, I should do a test against my other back, but I really think this is the best color reproduction I've gotten out of any camera. These were also processed in adobe camera raw via bridge with minor adjustments.

Just got home. Yep, 1/40 at 3.5 at ISO 800. And thanks for the compliments! :)

Here's another shot with my X1D. Since it was a paid shoot and wanted to be in my regular rhythm, I did most of the shoot with my H4X, but switched off a little bit with this camera. Didn't have any functional issues triggering with the Profoto remote and there was no noticeable lag.

I initially thought that I had a bad battery or charger or both because the charger still showed a red "not fully charged" LED after charging overnight. After panicking and fiddling around with the battery and charger for a few minutes, the green LED "fully charged" indicator was lit. I charged it up to operator error and haven't had a problem since. Early days.

Joe
Since these are now arriving (mine came yesterday) I thought I would comment on the battery charging issue. I read somewhere in one of the manuals that an initial charge could take up to 6 hours, so I stuck the battery that came with the camera on charge and prepared to wait. After about 3 hours something tripped the circuit and I had to reset it - upon reset the LED was showing green. Disconnecting and then reconnecting it - it still showed green and so I put it in the camera and it showed 100%. I also received two extra batteries. The first of those charged fully in exactly 3 hours and the other one fully in 2 1/2 hours. No explanation - here in the UK we're on 240v but I can't imagine that makes a difference.

Sadly I missed receiving my X1D for a trip to Cambodia by about 2 hours. Today in the UK was wet and grey and so I spent the day looking at my files from Angkor Wat and lamenting its absence. All I could do was point it at dull grey leafless trees for a bit of a play. Initial observations are that the concerns over shutter lag and EVF blackout seem, to me at least, totally irrelevant. I photographed extensively around Angkor with a 503cx and the CFV-50c and the blackout there after an exposure really is a blackout. Mind you I probably wouldn't want to use on the finish line of the 100m sprint with Usain Bolt arriving. But tomorrow is supposed to be sunny so perhaps I will be able to contribute some pictures soon.

The only oddity I found was in updating the firmware. I used the 16gb sandisk card that came with the camera but my Mac wouldn't allow me to copy the files to it. Only when I changed to card to "locked" could I copy the files. No idea why this should be but it took me 1/2 hour of scratching my head before trying this totally illogical step.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts. I'm still holding out hope that the X1D might be the digital equivalent of my loved Mamiya 7. I want simple, simple, simple, but it must be rock solid!

Mine's arrived. First thoughts: gorgeous but glitchy. More to follow.

I've experienced a couple of quirks with the X1D that may or may not be firmware bugs. If anyone else has observed these behaviors, please speak up.

• I've recently been getting a "No Card" indication on the rear LCD with a SanDisk 64GB Extreme Pro (95 MB/s) SD card. To get the camera to recognize the card, I have to remove and reinsert the battery. This happens while I'm shooting and occasionally when I first power on the camera. And yes, it happens with either SD card slot.

• The Display>Image Preview>Show Preview setting seems to be iffy. Sometimes I get what Hasselblad calls a "Preview" after a shot even when the checkbox is unchecked. Sometimes I don't. Calling the review image a Preview threw me off at first until I figured out what they were referring to.

Firmware version 1.15.0 gave us focus peaking. I don't like having to choose between focus peaking and auto magnification when in manual focus mode. Why can't we have both?
Joe:

1. I use the same cards and have had no issues at all.
2. I have not had that issue.
3. I agree. You should be able to use both. I have never been a fan of focus peaking to set focus, but I sure would like some way to press a button to have the camera automatically set the hyperfocal setting for the specific lens and aperture, with the EVF showing the hyperfocal range that was set.
