@dchew youre giving me serious west coast envy. I haven’t had the opportunity to go west of the Mississippi in years. Great shots!
Thank you, Todd. There is something about the geography and environment west of the Mississippi that I love.

Despite the pandemic, I’ve been traveling some. Mostly for work, but also occasionally for fun. I don’t want to come across cavalier about traveling, and I do try to take reasonable precautions. I am conflicted about my travel because I do take the pandemic seriously, while I also have some life changes that make spending time outdoors necessary for my sanity. This trip was for work, but my sister lives in St Helens, so I went early to see her over the weekend. It was good food for the soul. I cherish my time in the woods, and appreciate how special the opportunities are that I have to travel during all this.

Same here. Constantly leaves me wondering why we live on the east coast. If not for extended family in our immediate vicinity, we'd probably make the move to Colorado or Oregon.

I was hoping to make it out to Oregon last year to see my Grandmother and her husband, who live[d] in Ashland. The plan was to fly into Portland and drive down the coast (with cameras in tow :) ), but then the pandemic was still going on, and my small kids can't get vaxxed. They just recently moved to Arizona so that plan got scrapped anyway. C'est la vie. I don't have much time for travel right now anyway.

Lace lichen or beard lichen, not sure which, hanging from an oak tree in California's Santa Ynez valley. This is the first time I've tried The Orton Effect. Decided to give it a go since the subject matter seems like a good fit.

Nice shot.

Hey you're in my backyard. What's up with that ? I thought you were a Colorado guy ?

Seriously I live just a few miles south of where you shot this. It's lace lichen in the Santa Ynez valley. Head up to Northern California and you'll find beard lichen.

I have always wondered if Michael Orton was trying to achieve the look of a Zeiss Softar 1. It was after all the 80's when he became known for this 'look' and the Softar 1 was pretty standard kit for Hasselblad shooters back then. I still have mine.

Thanks! Lol!

My wife and I just got back from a week in California that started in Santa Barbara. She wanted to see Nojoqui Falls and on our way back to Santa Barbara we took Alisal Road to Solvang. Such a great back road. Trees like this were all over the landscape. I would have liked to spend more time hiking around, but it is all private property so I had to be happy taking pictures from the roadside.

Now that I'm back home in Colorado, I'm definitely missing California's warm weather and greenery!

Interesting thought! I'll need to pull out my collection of Softar filters and give this a try...

In terms of composition this was a rather difficult shot. I did two shots: a wider one with more background to "breathe" and a close up. To me the wider one "feels" better. I am curious to know what you think...

For me it is the second one. It has more questions than the first one witch answers. Meaning that the right corner, the cars in the background are a little bit too much and distract from the weird lamps. And I like that everything is cut off, the house, the wall, the pole in the foreground...

Very interesting subject, I think either works. I also like the idea of really cropping in, although I don't know if the environmental surroundings are an important part of telling the story. I hope you don't mind, I cropped and tweaked to give you an idea of what I was talking about. Thanks for sharing!

I have neglected to post in this section in a while, I get in a hurry and forget, so here is one from Death Valley from 2021 that I am just now getting around to. I was supposed to go back to DV in January but came down with covid, going back thru these files helps. This is the area right around Zabriskie Point at sunrise.

Check out Guido Guidi's work. He is a master of compositions like the first photo you posted.
