In the forest closest to where I live they had a large open space with lots of myrtle, which scented beautifully in late summer. However due to more and more trees coming up there the myrtle slowly retreated so the nature board decided to intervene. Several trees were cut down and part of the top soil was scraped off (immediately creating a shallow ditch). From several other trees they removed a ring of bark so the tree will die, fall over and allow nutrients to go back in the ground. Hopefully the Myrtle will now grow back to full strength. Here's how it now looks:

1: Shallow ditch

2: Death sentence

3: More trees that have died or will do so soon
