I have an "obsolete" lens question, hope it's not too far off topic:
My 85mm lens is an ancient f/1.8 non-D. Optically, it's not a bad lens, but it's insanely noisy, very slowly when focusing and it's Bakelite style plastic is as ugly as it gets. Manual focusing is in reality impossible, due to lack of presission.
So I consider buying a new one. I'd love to buy the f/1.4 AF-S, but it's out of my budget at the moment. So it's the f/1.4 AF or the f/1.8 AF-S. Objectively, the f/1.8 is the sharper lens, particularly around the edges and corners. However, the old f/1.4 has "something", particularly used with film. Used 1.4 costs around the same as a new 1.8. What to do? Has anybody owned both?
